Protect Rainforest in the Pacific
Kira & Toro
Malaita, in the Solomon Islands, is an enchanting blend of lush rainforests, clear rivers, and serene coastal waters. A paradise with traditional villages where life moves to the rhythm of age-old customs and vibrant panpipe music.
Toro is the deep green center of Malaita, a place with deep-rooted traditions and cultural richness. It is the deep forest, the high mountains, the flowing waters and the cool embrace of tree, spirit, stone, water. It's the calls and flurry of birds, it's the thrum of insects, it's the calls and drums of the human voice that has existed in these mountains for millennia.
This project will work closely with the multiple indigenous populations within Toro to help them secure their way of life and remain in place. This will include forest ranger programmes, projects to deliver quality education, improved access to running water, better healthcare and cultural centres where elders can pass their knowledge onto the next generation.
"The forest is our ancestral home"
“We need an economy which builds up our resources instead of destroying them, which raises up our cultures and values instead of pushing them to the ground, that invests in our people and their knowledge instead of exploiting them." The Mala I Tolo Declaration 2021

Meet Kira
Kira is the name of one part of Toro, that part of Toro which exists in the narrow waist of the island of Malaita, which forms part of the northern arc of the twin lines of islands that form Solomon Islands. The people who have come from and out of Kira live in three coastal villages both north and south of this green heart. But when they dream they walk these lands, crossing these streams and breathing this air. And when they plan looking to the future no matter where they are on earth they stand in Kira.
